A Lesson from Nature
Let's face it...when it comes to landscaping, Mother Nature does
it best. With the rising cost of water and shortages in some areas,
a lush green lawn can be costly. And, the price is not just measured
at your water meter, but also in the costs associated with lawnmowers,
assorted power equipment, lawn care services, gasoline, weed-killers,
fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals. Further, these chemicals
wash down the storm drains, eventually flowing into nearby creeks
and rivers.
So what it is that Mother Nature can teach us? Xeriscaping is simply using what nature has proven effective. Utilizing native plants that are adapted to local rainfall amounts reduces the demand for watering. Native plants are adapted to local soil types which better absorb and release water and allow for deeper roots. They are also resistant to mildew and other diseases. And, reducing turf limits the most water-thirsty element of most landscapes.
It isn't necessary to overhaul your entire yard at once. Begin by reworking one flower bed with natives, or reduce turf by using more suitable plants in a "problem area" of your yard. You can effectively reduce both the maintenance and cost of your landscaping.
